Texts

  • Carmen Mariscal. Motherhood and fatigue are themes of his recent pictures.
    Land and air body.

    JUAN BUFILL La vanguardia

Carmen Mariscal has a rich “biogeography”: is Mexican, Catalan descent, born in California (1968), formed as an artist in London and Barcelona and lives in Paris. His work combines photography with installation and, by his personal way of thinking from the representation of the body-and often the self-portrait, can be regarded as exceptional in mainstream. For obvious reasons, the body has been and is a prime topic in art and in life, but the reflection on the body has become a topic of recent art. Changes in the definition or the identity of the feminine and the masculine or the natural and the artificial explain this phenomenon, but it has reached saturation of images that supposedly reflect on or from the body, and is suspicious abundance of women they take self-portraits naked, in a gesture of exhibitionism worthy of a better cause some obvious proposals and adorned with artistic pretensions sociological alibi. In this context, the work of Carmen Mariscal is an exception for its authenticity. Not resort to stereotypes of mass culture or pseudophilosophy equipment but part from personal experience, which is individual and overall species. In the plastic aspect, the artist has found its own way: a predominance of gray and silver photographic, spiritual or spectral; The use of boxes with mirrors on the bottom allowing the mixture floating figures, photographic images and objects; a tendency to show the dematerialization of matter, of bodies, their lightness and erosion. In successive exhibitions the artist has expressed his love for others, the fragility (before it became fashionable after 11-S), affective and vital deficiencies or absorption as birth. In “stuff” the subject is pregnant women, cesarean section, twin sons, tired mother. It occurs to me that if the bodies of Ana Mendieta ruled the earth and fire elements, Carmen Mariscal dominated by a ground and air imagination, and now seems to be at the point where the terrestrial prevails, with its concrete presence, lively, friendly but also serious and agrietable.
