Manel Armengol Insurreccions

24 Feb - 21 May 2017

Overview

Uprisings is an interdisciplinary exhibition on political developments and collective emotions that entail mass movements in struggle. It is about social unrest, political turmoil, insubordination, rebellion and revolutions of all kinds, and shows how artists have dealt with this topic throughout different historical periods.

The exhibition brings together nearly 300 works created by over 100 authors who address insurrections and their representation through different media and techniques: paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, films and documents.

After his exhibition at the National Gallery of Jeu de Paume, in Barcelona, in close collaboration with the team at the Museu Nacional, the curator of the exhibition, the philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Huberman, has constructed a specific discourse integrating a selection of works mainly from the Museum’s collection, but also from the Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona and the Arxiu Nacional de Catalunya. The sample consists of more than 90 paintings, drawings, posters, photographs and four sculptures which bring together a unique vision, both because of the similar topic (ranging from the War of Independence to the Civil War and the struggle against Franco) and because of the artists represented: Martí Alsina, Marià Fortuny, Juli González and Republican poster artists and photographers from the Transition.
