Laercio Redondo 'Mies in Mind' at Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin

15 Aug - 28 Nov 2021

Laercio Redondo participates in the group exhibition ‘Mies in Mind‘ at Galerie Nordenhake.

On the occasion of the reopening of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Galerie Nordenhake presents works by Christian Andersson, Spencer Finch, Laercio Redondo, and Richard Serra in the framework of the gallery initiative Mies in Mind. You can visit it from August 20 until the 28th, 2021.

The group exhibition brings together works that directly or indirectly refer to another masterpiece by the architect: the Barcelona Pavilion designed by van der Rohe and Lilly Reich as the German Pavilion for the 1929 “International Exposition” in Barcelona, acclaimed for its simple forms and the spectacular use of materials.

Spencer Finch and Laercio Redondo have both presented site-specific projects at the Pavilion in 2018 and 2020 respectively. Finch’s pastel on paper Curtain Study (Barcelona) is a meticulous study of the color of the curtains in the pavilion as well as an intricate reflection of the passing of time. Laercio Redondo’s photographic work Untitled (Morning by Kolbe) standing on plinths of the same travertine stone as the floor of the pavilion explores its history and multiple narratives.

Christian Andersson’s full-scale abstraction of the Barcelona Chair Angel of Hearth and Richard Serra’s massive sculpture Step-Up also pay tribute to Mies van der Rohe as a major representative of minimalism in modern architecture and his formula “less is more”. In the former, the famous design icon has undergone a metamorphosis, transformed into a sculpture of an archeological artifact. Richard Serra’s harrowing balancing act of two, one-ton steel plates, one stacked upon the other, is a nod to the architectural role model who Serra praised for using “the material in the most representative, inventive, and efficient way”.
